The year is 2123, and society as we know it has broken down. Raiders, road warriors, and dangerous cults roam the shattered desert, and sinister villains decide the law of the land.

Sounds familiar, right? We all know and love the Mad Max setting, and TrueLab’s Guns, Love & Therapy refers to the post-apocalyptic franchise in many ways. However, the slot game comes in with a unique twist – the fight is not just about survival, but about gay rights as well. The two protagonists, Big D and Midnight Cowboy, are lovers fighting a dangerous fundamentalist cult.

Midnight Cowboy, of course, is a direct reference to the 1969 film that has gone on to earn a bit of a cult status in the gay community. We’ll let you decide what Big D refers to.

This pride-filled world is brought to life by incredible graphics and a few pages of info about the characters and the setting. TrueLab put a lot of work in to flesh it all out, but this clearly isn’t a “style over substance” kind of game either. Not with the high RTP and exciting features, which we’ll discuss in detail in this Guns, Love & Therapy review.

HOW TO PLAY GUNS, LOVE & THERAPY

Played on 6 reels, this online slot machine largely works like a Megaways game. It’s not Megaways, mind you, but many mechanics are shared between Megaways and what TrueLab is calling Dynamic Ways.

For starters, there are no fixed paylines. You just need three or more matching symbols on three or more connected reels, starting with the leftmost one. Pretty standard fare.

However, Guns, Love & Therapy also doesn’t have fixed rows. Instead, the number of symbols per reel changes with every spin. Between 2 and 7 symbols are randomly drawn in each spin, which also randomises the number of ways in which you can win. Anyway, the game also houses two special symbols – Wilds and Scatters.

Our Verdict

From a mechanical standpoint, Guns, Love & Therapy by TrueLab is not incredibly original or unique. The features are nice to have and being able to buy them on-demand is great, but it’s nothing that the competition doesn’t also offer.

The way we see it, the game has two main advantages.

The first is the excellent RTP rate. RTP is crucial if you want decent long-term returns, so it’s very welcome.

The second is the attention to detail that was lovingly crafted into the game. If you’re a fan of slot games with a storyline and developed themes, it’s certainly an appealing offer.

Of course, we can’t mention Guns, Love & Therapy without also pointing out the inspirations from LGBTQ+ cultures. It’s certainly a bold move from TrueLab and we’re glad they’re not afraid to make a statement.

Ultimately, the game is not an earth-shattering release by any means. However, it has charm, spirit, and an identity that makes it stand out from the crowd.
