As New Zealand prepares to launch its online casino licensing program, industry giants like 888, Bet365 and Betway are showing interest.

The country’s internal affairs minister announced that 15 licenses will soon become available, attracting the attention of heavyweights worldwide.

New Legislation

The government of New Zealand declared its intention to implement regulations for online casinos for the first time in July. It is set to establish a comprehensive framework for the regulation of online casinos.

Legislation aimed at creating a licensing system is set to be introduced in April 2025, with the goal of enacting it by the end of that year.

The vetting and auction process for potential licensees is scheduled to begin on February 2, 2026, allowing licensed operators to start their trading activities in April 2026.

As per internal affairs minister Van Velden each brand would require one licence to operate, and only 15 licenses would be initially approved. The future licensees will be selected via auction.

Potential Operators Show Interest

Considering the potential value of the NZ market to online gambling companies, this could start a sort of bidding war among some of the world’s leading companies.

Massive industry leaders such as 888 Casino, Betway, and Bet365 have already expressed interest. However, they will have to contend with brands already established in the market – namely SkyCity, TAB NZ, Grand Casino Dunedin, Christchurch Casino, Class 4 societies, and others. Though these local operations don’t have an online presence yet, they are established in the local gambling industry, which could be a valuable asset for attracting consumers.

Either way, online casinos in New Zealand are expected to go through a boom as the country finally tackles online gambling regulations.
