PRetty much everything about the way it looks is related to basketball in one way or another. That said, we’re not all that sure whether true fans of the sport will be all that attracted to it. Although high-paying symbols in the game are presented as players, this isn’t really an NBA-lciensed product or anything like that. Although the player symbols remind us of certain NBA stars, they’re really not. On the flip side, the theme does give Hoop King a clear-cut identity, so we’re not complaining – merely pointing out some facts.
Beyond that, the Hoop Kings slot game offers a fairly straightforward grid and a handful of familiar features. More interestingly, the game also has both-ways paylines, meaning you can make winning lines from right to left. Hoop Kings uses a standard grid layout with 5 reels and 3 rows. This makes it a bit smaller than many modern slots of this kind, which some players will immediately like. As usual, you win by hitting at least 3 matching symbols along one of the 10 pre-set active paylines.
The biggest standout feature of the game is the fact that lines can be made from left to right as well as from right to left. This works as you would expect it to – you still need an uninterrupted line of at least three symbols, but the line can start at the rightmost reel. This isn’t all that usual for online slot machines, so the game can feel quite fresh and interesting.
Only one special symbol can appear during the base game – the Wild. It can substitute any other type of regular symbol. Additionally, it is used to trigger a special feature called Game Time.
The Game Time feature triggers any time a Wild symbol gits on the middle reel, or reel number 3. Whenever this happens, one of four special features is randomly selected and activated immediately. These features include:
The math model of Hoop Kings is relatively predictable, holding no surprises for seasoned slot fans. The more symbols you hit in a single line and the more valuable they are, the better your payout. Speaking of symbol values, there are ten kinds of regular symbols in Hoop Kings. As is often the case, low-paying symbols are presented as playing card values. Kings and Aces are slightly more valuable than 10s, Jacks, and Queens, but they’re still quite low-paying. You’ll need at least 5 low-value symbols in a line to cover the cost of the stake.
As for the high-value symbols, they’re all presented as basketball players. However, none of them offer the same payouts gradually increasing in the following order: purple, blue, yellow, orange, red. Additionally, these symbols always appear in stacks of 3, covering 3 positions on a single reel. This significantly increases your chances of hitting a payline, but it also means hitting high-value symbols makes it harder to make low-value lines if you’re not lucky enough to get a full high-paying line. In other words, Hoop Kings can be surprisingly more volatile than it seems.
Hoop Kings RTP is 95.50%, which is unfortunately below most industry averages. The maximum payout is 5,000x, though it requires a 5x multiplier from the Multiplier Shot feature to achieve.
The Hoop Kings casino slot offers a relatively enjoyable but somewhat forgettable experience as a whole. On one hand, the both-ways paylines and basketball theme are sure to pique the interest of some players. On the other hand, both of these perks are somewhat marred by a few problems.
For starters, there’s no real depth to the basketball theme. Although it seems Booming Games expects the theme to be the game’s defining feature, it only goes as deep as made-up players as symbols and other visual effects. Sure, the graphics are pretty much all there is to an online slot theme, but it still feels a bit hollow. Secondly, both-ways paylines aren’t nearly as interesting as they used to be. There are definitely great slots out there that boast the same feature but won’t saddle you with sub-standard RTP. A few quick examples include Crystal Sun by Play’n GO or Fruit Zen by Betsoft. Both these titles also pay both ways but also offer above-average RTP.
None of this means that Hoop Kings is a bad game. It’s just that there are better options out there, and it doesn’t really offer anything to make you want to play it despite a low RTP. That said, the 5,000x maximum payout is quite decent, so we won’t try to dissuade you from playing this slot game if you’re interested in it.
